I have known Alysyn for a couple of years now. Her partner, Will Griffith, sent me her poetry for me to write a review for the back cover of her new poety book entitled Blacklight Chronicles.
I was hesitant, as I wasn't sure I would be able to write about it, as I am not a writer. I am an artist.
I found myself so absorbed by her poetry. I had to investigate it further, so I researched what every word meant. After spending a couple of days absorbing the words on the pages I then spoke to Alysyns and Will about me reaction to the work. I had visually interpreted the work without trying.
Alysyn mentioned that she would love to find an illustrator to do some images to go with the work. Of course, I have spent 35 years as an illustrator and have done many books. I told her that I would do some work and see if she wanted to use them.
It's a different approach for me, as generally I am commissioned by a client to illustrate their book in a certain style and they dictate what to do. In this case I am left wide open to create what I feel is going to relate to the poetry.
I have been creating for the past few days and have done the following illustrations. They are creating themselves and I am having a blast doing them.
Take a look.

I have always enjoyed interpreting my paintiings. Once I am completely finished with the design process and the painting is signed........ then I study and research what each elements means.
The process is life changing. Each painting teaches me something profound about myself.
It's always very magical, mystical and my psychic abilities always take me by surprise.
PLEASE ENJOY MY INTERPRETATION
ELEMENTS OF PAINTING
This painting contains many elements that can be interpreted for meaning. LisaLisa Flying on Ring was created with LisaLisa receiving wings. She is delicately perched on a ring with hands outstretched to a kneeling, submissive self.
The painting was inspired by the fact that LisaLisa came to me wanting to be portrayed. She is a Gemini and is tattooed on her torso and butt with flames. She also has an Ankh tattoo right below her belly button.
She wanted to be portrayed with both sides being shown.
I photographed her on November 10th, 2011 and delivered her painting to her January 2012.
I interpreted the painting..........LisaLisa has been transformed into an angel with wings. She is tattooed with fire and an Ankh. She is wearing a single rose and is surrounded by clouds. The columns with the big cat are significant to her transformation in this painting.
CLOUDS
Clouds hold the symbolic meaning of revelation. Clouds represent higher thought and messages from the divine.
ANKH
The Ankh symbolic meaning deals with immortality and balance. Meaning is "life" (immortatlity). It captures both immortality and balance. It can also represent zest, joy of life and energy. The best summary of its meaning is future life, life after death.
The symbol for sexual union and for life. It has command over the power of life and death. Part of its enormous appeal in art and tattoos is the expression of opposites in its symmetric composition. It i fundamentally a sign of life that is unending.
It is a symbol for the power to give and sustain life. The Ankh symbolized eternal life and bestowed immortality on anyone who possessed it. An Ankh serves as an antenna or conduit for the divine power of life that permeates the univers. It is a powerful talisman that provides the wearer with protection from the evil forces of decay and degeneration.
The Ankh also resembles a key and is considered the key to eternal life after death. It survives as an icon possessing mystical power.
The Ankh represents the purification of the path that you are taking in your life. Those who wear it would be blessed and protected.
The Ankh was never drawn in silver, as a sun symbol. It was always crafted from the metal most associated with the sun, gold.
To this day the Ankh is also used to represent the planet Venus (the namesake of which, the goddess Venus or Aphrodite was worshipped).
The Ankh symbol meaning is to consider the loop itself as a portal to other dimensions. The Ankh being a key that unlocks the realms of the Dead.
Protection, royalty, honor, sacred, hidden wisdom, covenant, power and authority.
The Ankh is a reminder of the combination of powers to shift our entire view. It also confirms our status, and insures us we are always protected by a magnitude of living energies.
WINGED HUMAN (ANGEL)
Angels are divine liaisons. They are messengers with the ability to move freely from the realm of earth-bound matter to the unlimited heavens. They are gifted with magic and flight, they are creatures of the divine. They live betwixt worlds. Greeks thought angels were responsible for moving constellations and planets. Duality.
Angels are symbolic of divine messages. They are messengers of important information. The message may be coming in the form of inspiration, divine intervention, or subtlety.
Angels also symbolize higher thought and ideals.
The sheltering symbolism of being taken under somebody's wing is based not only on the mothering habits of birds, but on the many winged protective spirits which appear in Middle Eastern art as temple guardians.
PILLARS AND ARCH
Since the dawn of civilization, the entrance of sacred and mysterious places have been guarded by two pillars. They are symbols representing an important gateway or passage towards the unknown.
The symbol of the pillars have guarded the gateways to holy places and mysterious realms.
Symbolically, going beyond the pillars can mean leaving the foulness of the material world to reach a higher realm of enlightenment. Between the pillars runs a path which leads upward from the uncertainties of earth to that perfect order which is established in the sphere of the enlightened.
CAT
Cat represents the guardian of the otherworld (or underworld). Stoic, silent and mysterious, cats fit the bill of otherworld guardians quite well. They keep the secrets of the otherworld eternally to themselves, as they gaze with guile upon a world that does not see or understand the depth of their knowledge.
In Ancient Rome the cat was sacred, the moon gooddess. The cat was considered a guardian of home and a symbol of domestic goodness.
Cats themselves are quite resourceful and tend to give us messages of change, flexibility of adaptability. When a cat makes an uncommon appearance in our lives it is a message for us to shake up our habitual routines and make some fresh changes in our lives, as well as be more flexible in our thinking.
It is often a message for us to distance ourselves from people or situations.
Lastly, the cat animal symbolism is about mystery. Simply put, the cat animal symbolism is synonymous with creativity and psychic power. The cat represents power over illusion. Cat animal symbolism reminds us to not fall prey to false beliefs, to not be a fool out of ignorance and derive understanding from our own internal wisdom. The cat beckons us to realize that when we turn within to our own hearts, minds and souls, and trust in ourselves we will always be shown the truth of the matter.
Cats deal with watchfulness, awareness, and perception. The cat is a message that there are energies at work that we may not be aware of, but we can certainly tap into. Cats are also a symbol of psychic ability.
LEOPARD (LisaLisa had told me that she was fond of the Leopard. I ended up creating a Cheetah, as I found out later when I studied the spots. I was told that I had painted a Cheetah instead of a Leopard. I was amazed by the difference of the two cats. I am so happy I ended up creating a Cheetah instead of a Leopard, as you will read in the following outlines.)
Although its courage resulted in its use as an English battle emblem, the leopard was a symbol of sin. This seems to have been based on a biblical analogy between a leopard's inability to change it spots and the difficulty of changing evil habits. It was associated in Egypt with the violent god Seth. Leopard images make a strong masculine statement. One that symbolizes strength, speed, courage and endurance.
The strength and power of the leopard represents the masculine qualities of the hunter. It also symbolizes social order and stability. In some regions, the leopard was a powerful totem animal, most infamously with a cult that believed that by eating the flesh and blood of their victims they could be transformed in leopards. These men would terrorize villages with ritual killings simulating the leopards, slashing gashing and mauling. From earliest civilizations, the leopard has appeared in legends and myths as a creature representing either evil or the sacred.
CHEETAH
Cheetah's medicine includes - speed and focus, brotherhood, elusiveness, ability to focus intently on something for a short period of time, swiftness, self-esteem, accelerating time and keenness of sight.
Different to other felines, who stalk, then swiftly jump on their prey for the kill, cheetahs, the fastest animals alive, run down their prey.
The lesson to be learned here, the inspiration, is to fulfill our goals with speed and focus. When we feel stuck, cheetah energy can help us spring into motion. If we are moving with great speed, but with little direction, cheetah medicine can help us to keep our eyes on our goals, to focus, and to find the most direct way of achieving them.
Though the cheetah is able to reach speeds of up to 63 miles per hour, it can only maintain this incredible speed for a short period of time. Afterwards, it must rest for around 15 minutes.
The cheetah period of rest teaches us that intense activity should always be followed by a time of rest, relaxation and contemplation.
As an animal totem, the cheetah symbolizes swiftness, insight and focus. Of all the big cats, the cheetah is the fastest. It is the fastest land animal on the planet. It is built for speed with a deep chest to accommodate a heart that accelerates rapidly.
The cheetah is a symbol of honor and respect.
Possessed of a relatively timid nature, cheetahs have long been trained as pets for their aristocratic owners. Ancient Egyptians revered it as a goddess.
RING (Circle)
The strength of the circle as an enclosing shape accounts for the protective significance of rings, which are still sometimes credited with semi-magical powers.
The circle symbolizes the absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the Universe, and the void. As an expression of the moment it is often considered a form of minimalist expressionist art.
An open circle may express various ideas. The circle is not separate, but is part of something greater, or that imperfection is an essential and inherent aspect of existence. The principle of controlling the balance of composition through asymmetry and irregularity is an important aspect of a Japanese aesthetic: Fukinsei, the denial of perfection.
The circle is a symbol that best represents connectedness. Since it is without beginning or end it represents infinity and shows eternal bond through the infinitude of the circle.
ROSE
White rose has come to symbolize purity, innocence and secrecy.
They are a representation of unity, virtue and the pureness of a new bond of love. Also a symbol for young love, which further strengthens the association.
White roses are also associated with honor and reverence. The white rose represents heavenliness and is an expression of spiritual love and respect.
They can symbolize new beginnings, or be a sign of farewell. They can convey feelings of love, friendship, respect and hope. Underlying all of these messages is the impression of innocence and purity with which white roses are synonymous.
NUDITY
Nudity often represents the inner self, the divine self, or authentic self. Depicting imagery of nudity symbolizes a state of freedom, vulnerability or spontaneity. It can indicate the nature of a relationship when two people are depicted.
Nudity can express inner longing or the desire to connect to someone else. Nudity can be used to depict human emotions and can represent a number of different themes including beauty, fragility, shame, fertility and power. It may also signify moving beyond conformity and often represents the expression of one's true identity. Nudity can express inner shame or the embarrassment of one's sexuality. On the other hand, it can also represent a person's inner power or authority over others.
Nudity usually referes to the expression or sense of wholeness within the psyche or inner self.
Nudity may represent either desire for sex; or a state of being at ease with yourself and not feeling a need to apologize for being the person you are; or complete honesty and openess in your dealings with other people.
KNEELING
Kneeling or genuflection is associated with reverence, submission and obeisance, particularly if one kneels before a person who is standing: the kneeling position renders a person defenseless and unable to flee. For this reason, kneeling is used as a position of submission to God.
Kneeling is to be servilely respectful and relating to servitude.
GEMINI
Dual-natured, elusive, complex temperament and contradictory are terms that best describe a Gemini. Gemini is capable of producing the virtue of versatility and the vices of two-facedness and flightiness at the same time.
Ruled by Mercury, Gemini's often get bored, impatient and frustrated by things that move slowly. Basically, they are intelligent, imaginative, lively and adaptable to any situation and person.
They easily get subjected to mental distraction and hovering between alternatives. Belonging to a dual sign, Gemini people are chameleons, as they blend well with their environment and at the same time, stand out apart in a gathering.
They love to play the game of life filled with fresh moves and continuous entertainment. Changing decisions in the mid of a race distinguishes a Gemini from the rest, as sticking to a particular decision is difficult for them.
FIRE (Flames)
Fire represents cleansing and renewal, for out of the ashes comes new growth, new thoughts, rebirth of ideas and new ways of being.
Fire acts as a messenger and is a gift from the Great Mystery.
The symbolism and meaning of flame and fire tattoos can be incredibly divergent. Fire is symbolic of destruction, sin, temptation, lust and hell, but at the same time represents change, passion, light, creation, wisdom, transformation, and rebirth.
Fire purifies whatever it burns, it is often used in ceremonies of cleansing, rebirth, and purification.
Flames may represent transformation, destruction, change, passion and a beacon of light. Flames have been used in religious rites and symbolism, as the smoke of the fire wafts towards the heavens it was thought to bear the wishes and prayers of the faithful. Fire and flames represent symbols of hope and light and knowledge.
